Upon reaching the shoreline, transportation will be waiting to bring you to Kuang Si. A short 300m before the entrance to the falls you will come to Kuang Si Butterfly Park, guests may choose to stop. If you wish to visit we shall arrange a private guided tour by either on of the founders. Olaf or Ineke. A lovely Dutch couple who created this butterfly paradise.
The rest of the day at the waterfalls can be spent visiting the Free the Bears Rescue Centre, exploring the trails to the top of the falls, taking a dip in the refreshing pools or simply relaxing. Guests will enjoy a picnic style Lao lunch at the falls and perhaps a couple of Beer Lao’s on the water’s edge!
Enchanting Kuang Si Waterfalls
The largest and most breath-taking of Luang Prabang’s waterfalls, Tad Kuang Si, boasts an impressive three tiers of falls, culminating in a sensational 50 meter cascade, before spilling into a series of mineral-rich turquoise pools. Pathways lead through the forest alongside these pools towards a charming wooden bridge where the falls can be enjoyed in all their splendour.
The water in Kuang Si’s shallow pools remains cool throughout the year and is therefore, a popular swimming spot for locals and tourists alike, especially in the summer months when escaping the heat becomes a priority.
Free The Bears
Kuang Si also plays host to the Free the Bears Rescue Centre and Kuang Si Butterfly Park. Located at the entrance to the falls, Free the Bears sanctuary provides a home to almost forty Asiatic Black Bears that were confiscated from poachers intent on selling them to bile-harvesting-farms beyond Laos’ borders. Each of the large enclosures have viewing platforms where you can watch the bears as they eat, snooze and fool around. It is worth noting that the sanctuary does not receive any money from the park entrance fee and therefore any support you can offer is welcome by way of donations or by purchasing any of the Free the Bears merchandise.
Kuang Si Butterfly Park
A short 300m from the entrance to the falls is one of Luang Prabang’s fantastic eco-attractions, Kuang Si Butterfly Park. Opening its doors in January 2014, the butterfly park aims to raise awareness about the vulnerability of Laos’ ecosystem and educate locals about the values of preservation.
