As morning mist gives way to glistening sun rays on the water’s surface, another day on the Mekong begins. Locals begin their daily routine, transporting goods to villages situated along this snaking waterway, or hitching a ride on a traditional slow boat for their daily commute. The river is dotted with fishermen on their boats heading out for their daily catch. The Mekong river, or Mother River as the locals call it, runs over 4300km from the Tibetan Plateau through China’s Yunnan province, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It not only serves as a geographical border, but also forms an essential artery supplying water and serving as a means of transportation.
Luang Prabang is where we call home. It is the ancient capital of the Buddhist Kingdom of Laos, located in the country’s northern region. It is home to a total of 33 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, boasting a mixture of natural attractions and historical sites. With mass tourism still side-stepping this little pocket of South East Asia, much of Luang Prabang’s original characteristics and personalities are still very much intact, giving you the perfect opportunity to observe and experience traditional Laos culture. Luang Prabang’s laid-back vibes, spectacular sunsets, mountainous landscapes, abundant nature, rich culture and historical heritage, all add to this underrated destination’s unique charms.
